There are so many options when it comes to dental care and you have to choose what is right for you. But, if you can consider the environment whilst doing it, that would be even better. I’ve loads of amazing products in store right now and you can find out about them all right here.
Toothbrushes – Did you know that roughly 3.5 BILLION toothbrushes are sold worldwide each year and that the average person uses 356 toothbrushes in their lifetime (from age 1-90, 4 a year).
Imagine those toothbrushes piled high in landfill – never fully breaking down, just leaving trillions of micro plastics and chemicals seeping into our ground and water!
Now….imagine that you, your friends and family all make a switch to a sustainable, degradable alternative, and that your friends, friends make the switch and so on. That 356 toothbrushes could soon end up being millions of bamboo or wooden toothbrushes which will not sit in landfill for ever more.
The toothbrushes I stock are made from sustainably sourced bamboo with nylon 4 bristles. If you remove the bristles, the handles can be home composted. And the bristles will biodegrade in 4-6 months! Hurray!
Making the switch to a non-plastic toothbrush really doesn’t take any effort. They are available everywhere now, and yes, they can cost slightly more, but that few pence can make a big environmental difference.
Floss and Interdental Brushes – Your regular dental floss is waxed nylon (made from crude oil), wrapped in a neat little plastic tub (also made of crude oil). Interdental Brushes are also made from crude oil and yes, you guess it…come in plastic boxes made from crude oil!
That is a lot of natural resources being wasted on our dental products.
But did you know that there are, in fact, eco-alternatives that work in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY, and will take no change in lifestyle or habit?
New to the Eco Living Ideas shelves is plastic free, vegan friendly dental floss which is made from 100% renewable resources and comes in plant based packaging. I have also got some interdental brushes in stock which have a bamboo handle and nylon6 6 bristles which will biodegrade much more quickly then regular brushes.
Switching to these products is kinder to your mouth and the planet and could save tonnes of plastic waste each year.
Toothpaste – I now stock an adult and child toothpaste in eco-friendly packaging which is vegan friendly.
Humble toothpaste has arrived and is available in Adults Fresh mint and Strawberry for kids, this toothpaste ticks lots of boxes. Here’s why I love it:
- Developed by dentists
- Formulated to clinically prevent cavities and protect your teeth
- Cruelty free
- Comes in Albéa Greenleaf packaging
What is Albea Greenleaf packaging I hear you shout…Greenleaf tubes are patented all-plastic laminate tubes for oral care. Albéa Greenleaf tube has successfully passed two tests set by the US-based Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) to assess recycling-readiness. The APR tests ensure that packaging such as the Greenleaf tube are compatible with HDPE bottles recycling streams and are thus ready to join an existing, efficient recycling process. They have a 34% less carbon footprint impact than regular toothpaste tubes.
So why is Humble toothpaste better for you than the regular toothpaste you’ve been using your whole life?
Well, this toothpaste doesn’t contain SLS, which can actually be an irritant and cause allergic reactions. If you suffer from mouth ulcers, SLS can actually aggravate these further! Being free from SLS means that this toothpaste might not foam as much as you’re used to, that doesn’t mean it’s not working though! It is also free from animal products and isn’t tested on animals, another win!
Electric Toothbrush Heads – Another fabulous product in the dental care range – recyclable electric toothbrush heads!
Using an electric toothbrush is great for oral hygiene and recommended by most dentists now, and it also significantly reduces the amount of plastic waste produced (providing you keep the same one for a number of years!), but, throwing the heads away can still create landfill waste.
There are a few recycling schemes around now but Brushd have made it even easier for you and include a pre-paid compostable pouch in with the brush heads so you can return them directly for them to recycle correctly!
The ones i stock currently are compatible with Oral B toothbrushes.
Toothpaste Tabs and Mouthwash Tabs – I have stocked toothpaste tabs for a couple of years now and am excited to add this new brand to the collection. A great product which is very low waste (and what waste there is can be easily recycled), they are good for your teeth, gums and the environment.
A brand new product is these mouthwash tabs! Simply dissolve in water, gargle and then spit out. No ugly, single use plastic bottles! They are also super convenient for travelling as you can simply pop a couple into your overnight bag. They are full of natural ingredients so kinder to your mouth too.
So there you are… you can now have a completely plastic free, low to no waste oral hygiene routine which is kinder to your body and to the planet. Shop the full dental range here.
